Ninety Mile Beach

The world-renowned Ninety Mile Beach, 88 kilometers long, stretches between Ahipara and Scott Point which is five kilometers south of Cape Maria van Diemen.

Officially, the beach is a highway for four-wheel-drive SUVs and taxi companies, for safety reasons, generally ban taxis from driving on the beach. Therefore, it is more convenient to take a touring car that departs from Kaitaia and then one can enjoy the beautiful views of the beach.

Ninety Mile Beach is provided with different activities, including surfing, fishing, swimming and sand-boarding. There is also a special activity, which is to dig in the sand when the tide ebbs, looking for a kind of local shells called Tuatua Shells. Next to the beach lies Aupouri Forest and it is the best place travelers can go to for cooling in extremely hot days.

At the last week of February, a fishing competition will be annually held in the beach. Thousands of competitors will gather in the beach, wishing to win.
