Greymouth


Greymouth, a port city in the west coast of South Island, New Zealands, lies at the mouth of Grey River, bordering to Tasman Sea and 160 kilometers southeast away from Christchurch.

Greymouth (meaning broad river mouth and known as the river mouth in town) once was inhabited by the Maori and is the biggest town in the west coast of South Island.

The region ever witnessed the history of gold rush and travelers can go to local museums and nearby Shantytown to appreciate the history.

The local bear breweries can be called as the wonder of New Zealand. They can serve travelers for beer. There are many other activities in Greymouth, including sea fishing, fly fishing, walking around the pier and visiting Elizabeth Track.

A scenic reserve and several old gold mines are dispersed along Elizabeth Track. You can also find some craft stores around the town which specifically display New Zealand emeralds.

Mining and logging industry is developed nearby, making Greymouth the port of exporting coals and wood.

A powerful wood processing industry has been established in the downtown. Greymouth is the railway hub in the west coast. An electric railway crosses the Alps through Greymouth, which connects Christchurch in the east coast. Departing from Greymouth, travelers can enjoy the view of glaciers and visit the breading grounds of sea lions.

Distinguishing Attractions in town:

Shantytown maintains the history of towns just being founded. Travelers can take an old train to experience gold washing (maybe you can find gold) and visit 30 historic buildings.

Jade Boulder Gallery displays different types of emeralds in their natural forms and travelers can visit the work of sculptors.

Lake Brunner is famous for fishing trout and beautiful views.

Blackball is a small mining town where New Zealand Labour Party was founded. Travelers can visit the colorful "former Blank Bauer Hilton” hotel.

Many adventure tours are provided, including drifting, dolphin watching, riding four-wheel motorcycles, drifting in underground karst caves and scenic flight.
