Christchurch


Christchurch, located in the east coast of South Island, also known as "Garden City”, has a population that reaches 340,000. Christchurch is the third largest city in New Zealand and the biggest city in South Island, following the biggest city Auckland and the capital Wellington. Besides Auckland, Christchurch is the second largest gateway that connects with all parts of the world. The population of Christchurch is 327,211 and the terrain is flat. The city is alive with British cultures, filled with arts and cultures, and equipped with complete infrastructures.

Main scenic spots in the city

Catholic Church---solemn and respectful, erected in the downtown square. The Renaissance classical architecture has become the symbol of the city.

Art Centre and Remains of former Old Gothic University---integrating many outdoor cafes, restaurants, workshops, bone carving stores and clothes shops.

Canterbury Museum---collecting the natural history, literature, valuable documents and photos of the Maori and Scare Island.

Robert McDougai--- an art gallery next to the Botanic Garden, displaying masterpieces of painters in New Zealand, Britain and early Europe.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve---breeding many rare and endangered animals in New Zealand. Orana Wildlife Park breeds plenty of wild animals from all over the world.

Airforce World--- a world-renowned aviation museum, displaying repaired old aircraft and new warplanes.

Cathedral Square--- the center of Christchurch, gathering numerous street performers and on a par with the Cathedral Square in Britain. Bridge of Remembrance, at the west side of the square, is designed to commemorate soldiers that sacrificed their lives for World War I.

Victoria Square--- with the statue of Queen Victoria as the landmark, gathering many art and culture performers, including some famous and outstanding masters.

Up in the sky---taking a fire balloon and reaching for the sky. You will feel free as a bird, appreciate the morning light and mist, and enjoy the whole view of the city.

Visiting International Antarctic Center---Christchurch is the research center of Antarctic expedition which displays documents of different antarctic organizations and simulates the terrain and climate in the South Pole.

Mountaineering by cable car---taking a cable car which can directly arrive at Cavendish Mountain, overlooking the stretching coastline, green plains and lofty Southern Alps.

Boating on lakes---taking a special boat on the winding Avon River which can go around the city and give you a romantic experience.

Shopping---big stores have entered the downtown area, selling different brands and products. It is a great place for shopping and recreation. At weekends, you can go to the flee market in Arts Center to find delicate local crafts and accessories.

Golf---Christchurch is equipped with several complete golf courses and you can golf with your friends to see who is better at golfing.

Starting point of antarctic expedition

Christchurch plays an important role in the Antarctic expedition. Robert Scott and Emest Shackleton both chose to start their antarctic expedition from the port of Christchurch. A statue of Scott,carved by his widow, has been erected in the downtown area of Christchurch to commemorate Scott.

Christchurch International Airport is the main base of Antarctic Program of New Zealand, Italy and America. International Antarctic Center is equipped with base facilities, museum and tourist center.
